Motorhead's overwhelmingly loud and fast style of heavy metal was groundbreaking in the late 70s and though Lemmy's roots were in progressive space rock band Hawkwind he chose to amplify the heavy biker rock elements with the speed of punk when he formed Motorhead. They weren't punk, forming before the sex pistols, but they were just as anarchic and they were the first metal band to harness punk energy in their frenzied wall of sound.
