'La Fille Mal Gardee' was first performed at Bordeaux in July 1879, on the eve of the French Revolution. Ashton's version, with typically witty scenery and costumes by Osbert Lancaster, was first seen in January 1960 and has been regularly revived to the pleasure of succeeding generations. The 'Fille' of the title is Lise, daughter of Simone, a widow and owner of a thriving farm. The complications of the story arise from the plans for Lise's marriage. Simone sees the advantage of an alliance with Alain, son of a rich, pompous vineyard owner. But Alain is a simpleton and nothing like as attractive as Colas, the young, handsome farmer she has set her heart on. True love, of course, eventually triumphs.
