The 'drama per musica' Giulio Cesare in Egitto (Julius Caesar) received its premiere on 20th February 1724 at the King's Theatre in the Haymarket, London. Handel himself went on to conduct over forty performances of the work in London, making a number of revisions in 1725, including that of switching the part of Sesto to a tenor role. With Oskar Hagen's production of the work for the 1922 Gottingen Festival, Julius Caesar once again became the most frequently performed of Handel's operas on the international stage.
