A vineyard in Greece.
It is the grape-picking season, Thespius, the inventor of comedy, is sound asleep on a patch of grass, overwhelmed by wine. Satyrs and Menaeds awaken him. He must sing to entertain them. He pulls himself together and sings, but in his drunken state he sings the truth. His audience now want him to be quiet.
Thalia and Momus enter. They ask Thespius to follow them. They have come to help him stage a performance to correct the faults of humans, taking the God's bad behaviour as an example. Cupid arrives late and furious. Without Cupid, there is no subject, without Cupid, there is no entertainment.
