This programme was the only place for avant-garde, heavy metal, progressive and jazz rock performers to play live, as well as providing a showcase for American artists unlikely to appear anywhere else on British television.
Following on from the enormous success of the first volume of The Old Grey Whistle Test on DVD, BBC Worldwide is releasing a second volume featuring more seminal performances spanning the entire series, from 'Heads Hand & Feet' in 1971 through to 'The Pogues' in 1986.
