Shostakovich wrote his SYMPHONY NO. 9 at the close of World War II. Stalin undoubtedly expected a triumphal work: instead, Shostakovich wrote a very sarcastic, light-hearted piece that stands in stark contrast to his often grim war symphonies, the Seventh and the Eighth.
Tchaikovsky's SYMPHONY NO. 6 was his last composition, first performed barely a week before his mysterious and tragic death. It remains one of his most popular works and contains some of his most appealing and emotional music.
Maestro Solti, leads this sparkling and energetic performance, showing once more why his magnetic personality and his high-intense way of conducting made him one of the most acclaimed orchestral conductors of the 20th century.
