It is the height of the Mexican Revolution and a gang of bandits led by the charismatic El Chuncho (a mesmerising Gian Maria Volonte - A Fistful Of Dollars; For A Few Dollars More) are stealing weapons and selling them on to rebel "General" Elias. During a raid on an armed train, a mysterious gringo, Bill Tate (Lou Castel), surprisingly assists the bandits by killing the driver and stopping the train.
Chuncho takes an instant liking to Tate who insinuates himself into the gang, which also includes El Chuncho's brother and crazed priest, El Santo (Klaus Kinski - Fitzcarraldo; Nosferatu), and the beautiful Adelita (Martine Beswick - Thunderball). But Tate has a secret agenda: he is a covert US assassin on a mission to kill the rebel "General" Elias.
A Bullet For The General is an impressive, epic piece of action cinema directed by Damiano Damiani (A Genius; Amityville 2 The Possession), he fills the wide screen with adventure and joyous mayhem; complemented by an uplifting score from Oscar winning composer Luis Enrigue Bacalov (Il Postino, Kill Bill 1&2) and musical supervisor Morricone.
Yet, it treats its theme seriously and is hailed by critics and film makers, as the first, best, and the influence of, a whole sub-genre of pro-revolutionary westerns, including Leone's own A Fistful Of Dynamite. It is seen as much a western as an allegory on America's interventionist politics. Scripted in 1967 by Oscar nominee Franco Solinas (The Battle Of Algiers) with a refreshingly leftist point of view, the film wears its "Yankee go home!" message proudly on its sleeve and is ever more relevant today.
Available for the first time on DVD, this is the most complete version fully restored from the original film negative.
