A Delicate Balance was Edward Albee's first Pulitzer Prize winning play, and in it he re-examines the waspish, middle class America which he explored to such caustic effect in his classic, "Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?". Katharine Hepburn (The Philadelphia Story, The African Queen) and Paul Scofield (A Man For All Seasons, Quiz Show) excel as Agnes and Tobias, a middle-aged couple at the centre of this fragile tale of familial breakdown. When best friends Harry and Edna (Joseph Cotton and Betsy Blair) arrive seeking refuge from an unknown terror, the peaceful equilibrium is shattered. Added to the mix is the return home of Agnes and Tobias' daughter Julia (Lee Remick), running from the collapse of her fourth marriage, and Claire (Kate Reid), Agnes' ever-present alcoholic sister.
With stylish direction by Tony Richardson (Tom Jones, Blue Sky) this is the definitive cinematic version of an Edward Albee play, and the authors personal favourite screen interpretation of his work. A Delicate balance is a darkly comic and deeply moving exploration of love and compassion, friendship and family.
