A social problem film of the most unlikely kind, Broken Arrow is one of the most important Westerns ever made. It tells the haunting tale of the friendship that develops between Tom Jeffords (James Stewart) and the Apache chief Cochise (Jeff Chandler) as Jeffords struggles to make peace between settlers and Apaches. As Jeffords' relationship with the Apaches, and in particular with a beautiful young Apache girl (Debra Paget) deepens, his situation, and that of the Apaches, becomes increasingly unstable.

Groundbreaking in its humanist portrayal of the Apaches and controversial at the time for its measured portrayal of relationships between whites and Native Americans, Broken Arrow is a poetic and brutal film which dares to pit peace and love against the violent and malevolent ways of the West.

With fantastic central performances, masterful direction from Delmer Daves and a story which is as fresh today as it was in 1950, Broken Arrow is a film which revolutionised the Western, and is a shining example not only of the genre but also of Hollywood cinema at its most powerful.
