When George Knowles (Jack Warner) checks the football results with his wife Elsie (Kathleen Harrison), he is amazed to discover that he has won the football pools. As they celebrate with neighbours Ted and Margie (Charles Victor and Thora Hird) is in full swing, their son Johnnie returns home to look for his missing pools coupon. When George discovers that the winning coupon is really Johnnie's, and that it is shared with Syd Jarvis (Harry Fowler), he refuses to have anything to do with the money because of Syd's mother. In spite their windfall, bad blood with the Jarvis family threatens to tear the Knowles family apart, unless Syd and Johnnie can sort out their parents.
