During a nightclub shooting, New York jazz saxophonist, Izzy Maurer is hit by a stray bullet. Despite the care of his ex-wife and others during his convalescence, the realisation that he will never play his instrument again leads him to sink into depression.

Through a chance discovery of a telephone number and box containing a mysterious stone, Izzy finds a way out of his anguished life. The number leads him to Celia Burns, a young actress, while the strange stone transforms his life forever.
