When ambitious pollster Lawrence Smith (Jimmy Stewart) finds a small town whose citizen's opinions accurately reflect those of America at large - he recognises a chance to cash in. As local newspaper editor (Jane Wyman) latches onto his game the clash threatens to destroy the town and everything it stands for. A Classic 50s Hollywood feelgood film, this Capre-esque movie has its own stamp of quality. The stars are both Oscar winners; Jimmy Stewart (whose roles in such films Mr Smith Goes To Washington and It's A Wonderful Life marked him out as the feelgood actor) and Jane Wyman, a 50s star who married Ronald Reagan and would find late fame as Angela Channing in the 80s TV series Falcon Crest. Behind the camera are debut producer Robert Riskin who had gained repute as Frank Capra's screenwriter and won his own Oscar for It Happened One Night (1934) and legendary director William 'Will Bill' Wellman who had directed all the great Hollywood stars from James Cagney In The Public Enemy to Henry Fonda in The Ox-Bow Incident to Gary Cooper in Beau Geste.
