One of the great American independent films of the 1990s, writer-director Whit Stillman's timeless and unforgettable hit 'Metropolitan' is the sparkling comedic chronicle of an 'impoverished' young man's romantic misadventures 'not so long ago' in Manhattan's socialite scene.
Tom Townsend thrives on unrequited love and "the socialist model developed by the 19th century socialist critic Fourier". He also opposes the young, self-styled 'Urban haute bourgeoisie' and the elite socialising they represent but, follow an escort shortage, is coerced into accompanying the sweet and shy Audrey for the "Sally Flower Rat Pack"'s Christmas season. As the Pack's outspoken members Charile, Nick and Cynthia debate art, social criticism and literature, Tom's suspicions are realised and he becomes immersed in all of the witty and urbane barbs and ticks that exist amongst this conspicuous peer group.
What's more, Tom has unwittingly been brought back into the social sphere of Serena Slocum, the bewitching breaker of many an innocent young boy's heart and for whom Tom still carries a flaming torch.
Whit Stillman's droll and delightful debut signalled the emergence of both a unique cinematic voice and a raft of invigorating young acting talent.
