Local barmaid Layla Barkham watches James Parkes meet a man and follow him into dark woods. A figure drags a heavy trunk and casts it into the river. James Parkes arrives at Parkes Freight with a black eye, arousing a reaction from his father Colonel Matt Parkes .
At the Galsworthy estate, Captain Tim Galsworthy and Ed Lovell, both in TA uniform are renovating a car and taking part in the police/TA training. Barnaby, Jones and Stephens arrive for their training. It is being run by an overzealous Superintendent Cotton.
At Parkes's haulage, James and associate Dale dismantle a truck's false lining. Later that evening, Don Mitchinson does his security rounds at the haulage yard, watched from a distance by Penny Galsworthy. Suddenly, his telephone rings, causing him to run back towards his security hut, away from the hangar. As he runs, there is a huge explosion from within the barn.
At the Galsworthy workshop James discusses the delivery of a Bugatti with Ed Lovell and Tim Galsworthy and they sell a vintage Ferrari. Penny asks Tim why James is visiting their property; they have no business with him.
The mysterious trunk surfaces from its watery burial site. It contains a body later revealed to be that of the late Alan Grainger.
Penny reveals she watched James meet Tim. Barnaby asks the TA if they can identify the unknown body, then questions Ed and Tim about the photographed vehicle. Barkham reveals he saw Grainger trying to push a large envelope into James's hands. Barnaby arrests James Parkes in connection with murder but his questioning is interrupted when the forensics report reveals that Grainger's wounds from the tussle with James were inflicted an hour prior and separately to the murder.
Barnaby approaches Tim and is told that he sold Grainger a Bentley. Stephens enlarges the image of the speeding car and reveals a connection to Parkes's Agricultural Freight. Barnaby and Jones head off in search of James Parkes. The party discover Penny, Caroline and Layla in the woods with James Parkes dead in a near-by TA hut. The three women are suspects but are they the real killers?
