Leo McKern stars as the eccentric, bibulous Old Bailey defence lawyer, Horace Rumpole in this magnificent and hugely popular series penned by the barrister-playwright John Mortimer.
Originally broadcast as part of the BBC's Play for Today series, this is the first ever episode.
Rumpole's son Nick is moving to the United States and Rumpole is meeting him for a farewell lunch. However, before he can do this he must fight the case of a young lad accused of stabbing a man in a bus queue outside Lord's Cricket Ground.
Rumpole believes he faces an open-and-shut case, which he plans to wrap up by noon. But once he discerns the telling secret of his teenage client, he smells victory and mounts a full-on defence.
