It is 1934 and Sam Wilson is ten years old when his mother Dora leaves her husband and brings Sam to Skellerton, the Yorkshire mining village where she grew up. Her father, Jack, has been unemployed for more than eight years and her family has little enough money to support themselves. Will they manage with another two mouths to feed and how will Sam's boyhood change?
The Cost Of Living - Dora and Alan are finding their new life a strain because of the moral indignation of the locals. Jack is settling into his new job and Ethel gives birth to a baby girl.
Out Of The Blue - George has an accident in the pit but keeps it secret. Sam is clearing the shed on the allotment and discovers a book sent from his father which gives him renewed hope of his return.
United We Stand - The pit workers have been given notice because of a dispute and Jack addresses a rousing meeting calling for them all to unite.
The Beginning Of Winter - Dora is pregnant and admitted to hospital following a fall at home - she gives birth to a baby boy. Toby has heard from Harry who has asked for his fare home from Canada.
