The war is over and Sam is a young man. He is unhappy working in the pit and has no respect for Alan Dakin, his mother's ex-lover, whose house he lives in. When his Grandfather dies he leaves Sam some property and appoints him Trustee for his father. Nobody knows Sam's father Harry's whereabouts, or even if he is still alive.

A New World - Sam is working in the pit, living with the Dakin family and still not getting on with Alan. George is having an affair with Jean Tufton, Sam knows and Ethel suspects.
Legacy - Frank is demobbed and finding it hard to choose between a career in politics or teaching. Sam has been left some property by his Grandfather, Toby Wilson. He gives George and Ethel a house of their own.
Shape Yourself Round It - Sam give his Grandfather and Grandmother a house and reluctantly they move in. The other houses Sam owns needs to be sold and Sam meets Arthur Corby who is interested.
Under a Cloud - Everyone is settled into their new houses and Sam has a girlfriend who stays the night, much to Jack's disapproval. Jack is expected to be voted onto the council at the election.
Head and Heart - On the day before the election Ethel outs a Tory poster in her window. This sparks a row with George who is furious as his father is a labour candidate. Sam and his Grandfather have a heated argument.
