Expecting the weekend to take in high jinks and trip to the local whorehouse, events take a turn for the worse for the men when they take some canoes belonging to local Cajuns. Pursued by the angry owners, a gun battle ensues in which the only full-time military man among them is killed.

Without live ammunition or any knowledge of the vast and menacing terrain, the reservists - a powerhouse cast including Keith Carradine (Nashville), Powers Boothe (Sin City) and Fred Ward (Short Cuts) - find themselves locked in a desperate battle for survival.

A classic American male action movie with echoes of Deliverance, Southern Comfort boasts the minimalist dialogue, acute sense of place and pared down visual style that has characterised Hill films for The Warriors to The Driver, and 48HRS. Serving as a metaphor for America's part in the Vietnam War, the film's eerie and evocative score comes courtesy of guitarist and long-time Hill collaborator Ry Cooder.
