Paris, September 1942; the start of the German occupancy. The German-Jewish director of the Montmarte Theatre, Lucas Steiner, is said to have fled Paris leaving his wife, Marion, to manage the theatre. Trying to keep the theatre alive in a new play, Marion hires Bernard Granger for the leading role. Through the difficulties of the occupation, their relationship develops as Marion falls in love with Bernard. A play within a play, this is one of Truffaut's greatest box-office hits.
