Chris Harte and Emily Gold grew up together in seeming suburban bliss, sheltered by the love and support of their parents. Unsurprisingly, the deep friendship shared between the two blossomed into a high school romance, but the peace and tranquillity of the families' lives is brought to a devastating halt by a late night call from the emergency room. Emily is dead aged 17 from a gunshot wound to the head, inflicted by Chris, as part of an apparent suicide pact.
As Melanie Gold (Megan Mullally) and Gus Harte (Juliet Stevenson) attempt to hold their families together, they seek answers to the question slowly destroying their lives. How well did they know their children? When a detective launches an investigation into Emily's death, it threatens to destroy the last remaining threads of love and friendship existing between the two families. Drawing on Melanie's pain and loss, the detective convinces her that Chris may have had a reason to kill Emily. Only he knows the truth of that fateful night, but can he bring himself to reveal the secret of the pact?
