For nearly 40 years of the Cold War the cutting edge of Soviet intelligence was the Committee of State Security, better known as the KGB.
From March 1954 to the eve of the Soviet Union's collapse in December 1991, the KGB was a leading player in the theory and practice of Communism.
It operated on a worldwide scale and its functions included counter-espionage, foreign intelligence collection and analysis, protection of land and maritime borders, control of nuclear weapons and the Kremlin's guards.
Established in 1917 as the Cheka, the KGB grew to be larger than all Western intelligence agencies combined and exerted an iron grip from the Balkans to the Black Sea.
It is an incredible story!
