In Africa, schoolteacher Gwen Mayfield (Joan Fontaine) suffers a breakdown afterfalling victim to a rebellion led by witch-doctors. In an effort to help Gwen recover, the Reverend Alan Bax (Alec McCowen) officers Gwen the post of headmistress at the school he owns in the peaceful English village of Heddaby.
Gwen soon detects sinister undercurrents beneath the pleasantries of village life. Alan reveals that he merely poses as a vicar, and the sudden illness of one of Gwen's pupils coincides with the appearance of a headless doll. Alan's sister Stephanie (Kay Walsh) is a journalist who frowns on the rumours of witchcraft, and suggests that she and Gwen collaborate on an article.
As Gwen's suspicious grow, she discovers the extent of the conspiracy against her, and the terrible secret the village has hidden...
