Orphaned at 19, the glamorous identical twins Maria and Frieda (Mary and Madeleine Collinson) move from Vienna to the village of Karnstein to live with their kind, submissive aunt (Kathleen Byron - Black Narcissus) and grim uncle Gustav Weil (Peter Cushing - Dracula, Frankenstein). Gustav is a fanatical Puritan and leader of The Brotherhood, a religious sect feared for their witch hunts and burnings.
